The painter

About Ruth

I was born one morning in the city of Granada on 15 December 1974; the moon was waxing. When I think of Granada, I can see its landscape by day or by night, and I remember it with the moon in its phases, above the profile of the Sierra and the Alhambra.

I spent my first years in different postings such as: Ceuta, Santander and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. When I was 4 my father was posted to Vélez Málaga, where I spent my childhood and my adolescence, going through the first stages of school until I reached the University, when I moved to Granada.

The first years after returning to the Peninsula were marked by the light of the Region of the Axarquía and of the Costa del Sol. In those years of my childhood, I travelled very regularly to the city of Granada to see my aunts, uncles and grandparents during the winter, and in summer I visited them at their summer residence on the Costa Tropical of Almuñécar. Landscapes that shaped my first paintings and the more Naif aspects of an initial period in my painting. Landscapes full of winding hills outlined with olive, almond, mango and avocado trees, meadows on the slopes of the hills covered with sunflowers and poppies.

Soon I moved on from the landscape that came out of the memory of the journeys between the Costa del Sol and the interior of the Axarquía and its white villages, Comares, Frigiliana, Nerja, Cómpeta, Vélez Málaga, etc. Their seasons and their colours, the light of the Costa del Sol, and my roots in the Mediterranean Sea, give colour to my artistic production, which went on evolving and taking shape just as my personality did.

I began to paint in oils at home, self-taught, experimenting and discovering along the way with materials I found; my uncle and my great-uncle were painters, photographers and sculptors on my great-grandfather’s side, but although I kept up a good relationship with them, as they did not live nearby they could not guide my steps.

Until then my restlessness had led me to try all kinds of materials, and techniques, until I was completely captivated by the magic of oil. I understood that a hand was guiding me in my creative process from very early on, because things were revealed to me that no one had described to me or guided me towards in order to obtain the results. I visualised it, and I understood that I had to do it and had the need to do it.

I discovered study from life, still lifes, compositions and landscapes, until I began a period in which I sought to find a symbolism within the dreamlike quality of surrealism, mixing portraits, human figures and landscapes within the same painting, reveries in black and white and in colour in one same canvas. That period lasted some 4 years of continuous experimentation, between the ages of 14 and 18.

In that period I was part of a close circle of amateur painters with whom I held group exhibitions in Vélez Málaga and in Torre del Mar, in different exhibition halls, in El Palacio Marqués de Beniel. In the exhibition hall of the Atenencia de la Alcaldía of Torre del Mar.

Every work that leaves the studio is signed, documented and accompanied by its certificate of authenticity. If you want to know more about a piece, or see it over a video call before deciding, write to me.
